Suprisingly the domesticated turkey and the wild turkey do not come from Turkey! The currency is the Turkish Lira - Yeni Türk Lirasi, YTL. The capital city is Ankara, situated in the central area of the country but the largest city by far is Istanbul on the Bosporus. The official language is Turkish, but many people speak Arabic dialects or any number of European languages, including English. The most
important statesmen are the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Parliament. It has a trans-continental foot in Europe, west of the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, with the another in Asia to the east. A secular state with a mainly Moslem population, although Turkey has a leaning more towards Europe and the west, particularly as a military ally within NATO and in its modern culture, than its close Arab neighbours. Turkey is a popular destination for European tourists and buyers of second homes in the sun or investment buy to let property, particularly on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.
